Is it dengue? Have I had it before?

This is a quick self-test that uses a few drops of blood to tell you whether you have dengue or not. The test can also show you whether you have had dengue before by detecting antigens and antibodies that your body produces in response to infection.

It’s important to know if you’ve had Dengue fever before as you can still be infected again. Often, the second infection is more severe than the first. To prevent this, you may opt for a vaccination to protect against a second infection.

The rapid test covers:

Dengue NS1 – Antigens that cause the virus, typically positive during the first week of illness.
Dengue IgM – Antibody created in response to the virus, evidence of a current infection.
Dengue IgG – Antibody created in response to the virus, evidence of a past infection.

What are the symptoms of Dengue fever?

Symptoms can be very similar to the flu, which may include:

A severe headache
High temperatures of around 40
Muscle and joint pain
Loss of appetite and stomach ache
Vomiting or feeling nauseous
Widespread red rash

It is important to note that most cases are asymptomatic or mild.

However if you are intensely experiencing any of the above symptoms there is a chance you may have DHF (Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever) which may be life-threatening if left untreated.

How is Dengue spread? Is it contagious?

You can only catch Dengue Fever by being bitten by an infected mosquito. It is not directly transmissible from person-to-person.

The virus spreads when a mosquito bites an infected person and becomes a carrier. The next time the mosquito bites someone, that person may be infected with the Dengue virus.

It is highly recommended to use insect repellent to prevent yourself from catching the disease.

What’s the treatment for Dengue?

While there are no direct treatments for the Dengue virus, there are treatments for Dengue fever and steps to relieve symptoms. These may include staying hydrated and taking over-the-counter pain relievers.
