WHAT'S MEASURED

A Complete Blood Count (CBC) gives information about red blood cells (that carry oxygen through the body), white blood cells (that fight infections), and platelets (which help create clots to stop bleeding after an injury).

Total cholesterol refers to the sum of all cholesterol present in the blood, including low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, and very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) cholesterol. It is an important measure used to assess a person's risk for cardiovascular diseases.

HDL cholesterol is often referred to as "good" cholesterol because it helps remove LDL cholesterol from the bloodstream, reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease. Higher levels of HDL cholesterol are generally considered beneficial and protective against heart disease.

Triglycerides are a type of fat found in the bloodstream. They are the most common form of fat in the body and serve as a source of energy. Elevated levels of triglycerides can be associated with an increased risk of heart disease and may be influenced by factors such as obesity, physical inactivity, excessive alcohol consumption, and certain medical conditions.

Fasting glucose refers to the level of glucose (sugar) in the blood after a period of fasting, typically for at least 8 hours. It is a common test used to diagnose and monitor diabetes. Elevated fasting glucose levels can indicate impaired glucose metabolism and may suggest the presence of prediabetes or diabetes.

HbA1C (hemoglobin A1C) is a blood test that provides an estimate of average blood glucose levels over the past 2-3 months. It measures the percentage of hemoglobin (a protein in red blood cells) that is bound to glucose. HbA1C is commonly used to diagnose and monitor diabetes, as it reflects long-term glucose control and helps assess the effectiveness of diabetes management.

ALT is an enzyme found primarily in the liver. An ALT test measures the level of this enzyme in the blood, which can indicate liver damage or disease. Elevated ALT levels may be seen in conditions such as hepatitis, liver cirrhosis, fatty liver disease, or medication-induced liver injury.

AST is another enzyme found in various tissues, including the liver, heart, and skeletal muscles. An AST test measures the level of this enzyme in the blood and is used to evaluate liver function and detect liver damage. Elevated AST levels can be seen in liver diseases, heart attacks, muscle injury, or certain medications.

ALP is an enzyme present in various tissues, with the highest concentrations found in the liver, bones, and bile ducts. An ALP test measures the level of this enzyme in the blood and can help identify liver or bone disorders. Elevated ALP levels may be associated with liver disease, bone disorders, or certain cancers.

Bilirubin is a yellow pigment produced during the breakdown of red blood cells. It is processed by the liver and excreted in bile. A bilirubin test measures the level of this pigment in the blood and can help assess liver function and diagnose conditions such as liver disease, hepatitis, or jaundice.

GGT is an enzyme that plays a role in the metabolism of glutathione, a substance involved in the detoxification of certain compounds in the body.

This test will inform you of your blood type. For a full explanation of blood typing, read this article: Understanding Your Blood Type
